With the arrival of John Lewis and the much needed improvements to House of Fraser I haven't really visited Debenhams much recently. I have noticed however that there's actually been quite a bit of refurbishment done to the place. To be honest though it merely seems like they've merely moved things around rather than drastically improved the place.
Women's clothing (which includes brands such as Topshop, Jane Norman, and Miss Selfridge) is now upstairs, and they have extended the shoe, beauty and bags sections. I must admit the fact that they now stock GHD straightness did impress me, but aside from that, I wasn't particularly fussed.
I wouldn't let my less than positive opinion put you off; this Debenhams is fine, and far superior to the one in Swansea. I also think that if you're on more of a budget it's a very good alternative to Cardiff's two other department stores. -

Debenhams has certainly grown a lot with the arrival of St. Davids too and its own makeover. Previously it felt very crammed and confusing, now its just confusing. I think I'm right in saying they have just knocked through the upstairs which makes it longer and gives it an additional entrance in the new section. The shoe department is much better now and the whole new part seems much younger than the rest of the store.
I personally like the beauty section in this store, and they even have a Clarin's Skin Spa is you fancy a bit of extra spoiling.
Worth checking out are the designer at Debenhams like Betty Jackson and Julian MacDonald and I really like the Red Herring selection. -

A piece of advice: if you have never been to this Debenhams before, and you like the directional instincts of a prodigious homing pigeons, may I suggest hiring a Sherpa guide or at least leaving a trail of breadcrumbs behind you as you go? If you don't, you are going to get lost and people won't find you for days. I've walked down aisles that look like tombs from an Indiana Jones movie in this place; the picked-clean bones of lost travellers adorning the dark corners where not even the staff dare to tread.
To put it simply, the layout's a bit of a mess. The ground floor consists of roughly nine bajillion make-up counters, all populated by tall, orange women with enough muscle on their bodies to support the 92lbs of make-up they wear on their heads. And these women aren't shy about tackling you to the ground in order to test their products on your prone body. If you get separated from your friends by one of these proto-Yetis, they should probably consider you gone.
Upstairs isn't much better. It seems like the staff are constantly playing hide and seek among the forest of clothing racks, and if you manage to catch one, they'll sigh dejectedly before sullenly helping you in the least helpful manner possible.
There's some good stuff in this store, but finding it is like finding a needle in a haystack, when someone keeps running over and kicking the haystack every two minutes or so. Also, the haystack is on fire. I suggest their internet site if you really need something from here. -

Debenhams for some reason is my favourite shop in all of Cardiff. I suppose it's because it's been here for as long as I can remember, and was always the first port of call after coming to Cardiff when I was little, and coming to Cardiff was a big deal.
On the bottom floor you've got women's clothing and a huge beauty section before heading upstairs to the men's clothes and then children's clothes, a restaurant and the home section on the floor above.
The restaurant is really good here, if a little expensive and is well located pretty much in the middle of town making it the perfect pit-stop. They've got a huge selection of clothes for everybody and unlike John Lewis, they sell all different price ranges too, furthering their customer base. I implore you to go in and see if you don't spend hours in there, such is the selection.
It's pretty huge, and I'd say it's probably the biggest store in Cardiff. When I was 9 I got separated from my mother in here. I put my sense of independence as an adult down to those few self-sufficient hours, and after doing 3 tearful laps of every floor, I came to accept that I was now my own man and I would never see her again. She eventually found me under a clothes rack though - what I had by then come to call home. I love Debenhams.
